Q

Is there any new license type in v7?

A

There are three new license types in Version 7: AhsayCBS, AhsayCBS Replication, and Ahsay NAS Module. Since these three license types were not in v6, you will need to purchase these licenses when you upgrade from v6 to v7.

Q

Ahsay has been offering free version upgrade with valid maintenance in previous major upgrade. Why are you charging extra for the v6 to v7 upgrade this time?

A

We have not changed our pricing approach in this upgrade from Version 6 to Version 7. Upgrade of the paid licenses in v6 to v7 (AhsayOBM, AhsayACB, Mailboxes, VMware, Hyper-V, and AhsayRDR) is still included with valid maintenance. In other words, you do not need to pay anything extra for the upgrade for these paid licenses if they are under valid maintenance.

However, there are new license types in v7 that were not included v6 (AhsayCBS, AhsayCBS Replication, and Ahsay NAS Module). Since you had never owned and paid for these new license types, they are not included as part of v6 maintenance. To be more specific, v6 maintenance was only priced in the unit of AhsayOBM/AhsayACB and maintenance of AhsayOBS have never been paid by our customers. This is why AhsayOBS is not included as part of free upgrade even with valid v6 maintenance. We believe that this is the right step forward to ensure both AhsayOBM/AhsayACB and AhsayCBS obtain their well-deserved license and maintenance fee to support further development and enhancement.

Q

AhsayRPS was free in v6 and so I can replicate my AhsayOBS free of charge. Now you are introducing a new license called AhsayCBS Replication so I have to pay for my replication. Why?

A

First of all, AhsayRPS is now an element in AhsayCBS in v7 and does not incur additional charge as this is the receiving end of the replication. We have major enhancements for the sending end of replication in v7 (speed of replication, multi-thread to name a few), and so there is a new license type called AhsayCBS Replication in v7 that is a paid license. We have made the replication scalable so you can decide how many of your devices need replication and in turn purchase the corresponding AhsayCBS Replication module. For example, if you have 10 AhsayOBM under your AhsayCBS and you decided to offer replication to only 7 AhsayOBM, you only need to purchase 7 AhsayCBS Replication module.

Detail enhancement in AhsayCBS Replication can be found in Part 3 of this FAQ.

Q

So v7 is now a per physical/virtual device pricing. What is the implication on my upgrade to v6 to v7?

A

If you utilize only one AhsayOBM across multiple physical/virtual devices, you will need to purchase supplement AhsayOBM when you upgrade to v7. If you have already deployed 1x OBM for each 1x physical/virtual machine, you just need to ensure you have valid maintenance to upgrade to v7, purchase additional AhsayCBS and corresponding AhsayCBS Replication for the upgrade.

Q

What is Backup Infrastructure as a Service (BIaaS)?

A

This is a hosted and fully managed AhsayCBS service that will alleviate your hassle to setup your hardware to host the AhsayCBS. You will in turn manage your own clients from the hosted AhsayCBS in the public cloud. The initial cost covers only a one-off setup fee, optional rebranding option and service, additional storage space, as well as the corresponding licenses you need. In order to provide an end-to-end pay-as-you go offering, we only support the meter model for BIaaS.

This model is ideal for MSPs who intend to start their online backup service for a small number of clients in a very scalable manner as the entire initial and ongoing investment is based upon your business growth. Details of BIaaS can be found here.

Scope of BIaaS Pricing

BIaaS:
Setup fee US$330 / AhsayCBS instance (one-off)
Monthly fee US$110 / month / AhsayCBS instance
No storage is included in the above pricing as mentioned above

License fee:
Actual meter usage fee as posted here.

2. Cost of Migration from Version 6 to Version 7

I can see you have increased your price by quite a bit. For example, the cost of 5x OBM will be US$220 X 5=US$1,100
I have an existing AhsayOBS key in Version 6 with valid maintenance, how can I migrate to Version 7?
I have an existing AhsayOBS key but it is out of maintenance, how can I migrate to Version 7?
Is there any auto update available from v6 to v7?
Does Ahsay continue to offer AhsayOBM & AhsayACB in v6?
How long does Ahsay plan to support v6?
Why does Ahsay switch to per physical/virtual device pricing in Version 7? It creates a burden on the upgrade.
Ahsay pricing that is based on $ per physical/virtual device is not competitive. There are other vendors in the market that offers unlimited licenses and based only on $/GB/month.
My client has a very peculiar configuration and your pricing is still not competitive for me.

Q

I can see you have increased your price by quite a bit. For example, the cost of 5x OBM will be US$220 X 5=US$1,100

A

Your understanding is not correct. We priced our licenses based on the accumulated licenses you have purchased in each type in your profile (i.e. your Client Number). For existing partner who has an accumulated purchased of more than 50, the unit price of AhsayOBM is downward of US$71.5/OBM. So the price on OBM in V7 is in fact in line with what you are seeing in V6. If you are pitching to a new customer, their unit price of OBM will start from US$220 while your cost is significantly lower.

You might want to refer to the example towards the end of the page on the calculation.

Q

I have an existing AhsayOBS key in Version 6 with valid maintenance, how can I migrate to Version 7?

A

If your paid licenses in v6 are under valid maintenance, you just need to purchase one additional AhsayCBS license for each AhsayOBS key you intend to upgrade to v7. If you are replicating your AhsayOBS (in v6) to AhsayRPS, you will need to purchase additional AhsayCBS Replication license per device.

Q

I have an existing AhsayOBS key but it is out of maintenance, how can I migrate to Version 7?

A

You will need to bring the maintenance of your existing paid licenses up to date for v7 AND purchase one additional AhsayCBS license for each AhsayOBS key you intend to upgrade to v7. If you are replicating your AhsayOBS (in v6) to AhsayRPS, you will need to purchase additional AhsayCBS Replication based on the number of connections.

Q

Is there any auto update available from v6 to v7?

A

Auto update (AUA) is now available in v7.5.

Q

Does Ahsay continue to offer AhsayOBM & AhsayACB in v6?

A

Yes. If you do not upgrade your AhsayOBS (v6) to AhsayCBS (v7), you can continue to add AhsayOBM & AhsayACB to the AhsayOBS key but you will lose out on the new features and bug fixes that are only in v7. The pricing for client side software (AhsayOBM, AhsayACB, etc.) will be the same as that of v7 and the details can be found here.

Q

How long does Ahsay plan to support v6?

A

It is Ahsay's strategy to support our software up to the previous major release. For example, v7 is now officially released, so we will continue to support v6.x but v5.x or before is now desupported. Based on the current plan to release one major release every two years and dot release every calendar quarter, we anticipate v6 will continue to be supported until 4Q2017.

Q

Why does Ahsay switch to per physical/virtual device pricing in Version 7? It creates a burden on the upgrade.

A

Per device pricing is an industry standard, especially when you consider the pricing of AhsayOBM is as low as US$66/OBM with an ongoing maintenance of as low as US$13.2/AhsayOBM/year. Bear in mind with this amount, we are continually enhancing our features that brings you integration to public cloud services such as Amazon S3, Google Drive, and Microsoft Azure, as well as VM Run Direct. We hope our partners can continually grow their business with these new features and we win with our partners. If we were to adopt an unlimited license model, our revenue will suffer that in turn will suffocate our development works. Without a stable software with new features, our partners will unavoidably suffer and eventually both Ahsay and our partners will lose out in the backup market.

Q

Ahsay pricing that is based on $ per physical/virtual device is not competitive. There are other vendors in the market that offers unlimited licenses and based only on $/GB/month.

A

On the technical side, a physical server can usually support up to 5x VM guests and bear in mind as the number of VM increases, the size of the data also increases. (As you need to consider both the user data and the server and application installation footprint)

Putting into monetary terms, other vendors that are priced at unlimited license are offering in the range of US$4,000+/TB/year. Assuming there are 5x VM in the VM host, the number of Ahsay licenses required will be 1x OBM (@US$66 each) and 5x VM modules (@US$33) with a total one-off purchase of US$66+5*33=US$231 and an ongoing maintenance of US$46.2/year. So the Ahsay pricing is significantly (~20 times) lower than those that is priced based on $/storage size/year in the first year, and for subsequent years, the ongoing cost for Ahsay is only ~1% of that of those vendors who are pricing based on storage. In addition, Ahsay does not limit the size of data to backup so the price you see will be fixed as the data size of your customer grows, which in turn means you will continually run a more and more profitable business.

To discuss the issue from another angle, vendors provide appliance with unlimited licenses effectively limit the servers you can backup as the appliance is not scalable. This also means a continually growing cost as your customer grows the size of data to backup. For Ahsay, your license cost is fixed and the ongoing cost is only the maintenance cost.

Q

My client has a very peculiar configuration and your pricing is still not competitive for me.

A

We always welcome healthy competition and it is also important that we understand the configuration of your client so we can both price our product and develop our features that meet your requirement. Please send us through the particular configuration at https://kb.ahsay.com or send an email to sales-manager@ahsay.com with the title "Competition". We are happy to work out a competitive offer in terms of price and features to meet your need.

Do I need to have valid maintenance for all licenses in the License Pool?

3.1 AhsayCBS Replication

Q

What's new with AhsayCBS Replication why is replication chargeable now?

A

There are major enhancements in AhsayCBS Replication in v7 that include
  1. Replication is in file blocks of 16MB or 32MB. This significantly reduces the backup and synchronization time since it reduces the read/write operation required on the physical media such as hard disk, and
  2. Multi-thread is used to speed up the process

Q

Why should I purchase AhsayCBS Replication when there are open source, free synchronization software?

A

AhsayCBS Replication, when work in tandem with another AhsayCBS receiver, offer a warm standby by with the AhsayCBS receiver can be switch over to AhsayCBS backup server as a failover. This is on top of the enhancements we have made in AhsayCBS that include faster backup & restore and multi-thread.

3.2 VM Run Direct

Q

How does the underlying of VM Run Direct works?

A

Ahsay leverages the VDDK (Virtual Disk Development Kit) functionality together with CBT (Change Block Tracking) to develop VM Run Direct. Upon request to restore from a backed up image, VMware Player will playback the image that is currently uncompressed and unencrypted and stored in a local destination. In parallel, we will perform live migration of the image back to the original location.

3.3 Ahsay NAS Module

Q

What is the Ahsay NAS Module about?

A

Ahsay understands NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices are driving a good adoption, mainly in the SMB (Small Medium Business) space. So we have developed this module so our partners can target this segment to backup data from the NAS device.

The license model will be based on number of NAS device required to backup for each AhsayOBM account. For example, if an AhsayOBM user has 2x NAS device to backup, 1x AhsayOBM and 2x Ahsay NAS modules will be needed.

3.4 Provision of Redirection Module and Replication Module

Q

I see on your website the Redirection Module and Replication Module is grouped under Add-On Modules in AhsayCBS. Does it mean I also have to purchase an AhsayCBS when I use these modules?

A

If you intend to provision Redirection Module or Replication Module in a separate server, you will need to make sure there is an AhsayCBS license installed. In most cases, Redirection Modules are provision on the same machine as the AhsayCBS so an additional AhsayCBS is not required.

Q

In v6, I purchased the same number of AhsayRDR (now called Redirection Module) as the number of client side licenses, is this license count still the same in v7?

A

Yes. The minimum requirement is to have the same number of Redirection Modules as the total number of client side licenses. However, this offers no resilience. If the AhsayCBS with Redirection Modules goes down, your client will not know which AhsayCBS to connect to and this will be the single point of failure in your system.

Our recommendation is to provision sufficient Redirection Modules in each AhsayCBS to offer additional resilience. For example, if you have 3 AhsayCBS with a total of 500x AhsayOBM, you can provision 500 Redirection Modules to each AhsayCBS. In other words, you will need a total of 3 X 500 = 1,500 Redirection Modules.

3.5 License Management Portal

Q

Is there any change to provision Pool Keys in the License Management Portal (LMP)?

A

The operation of License Management Portal essentially remains unchanged. With the addition of AhsayCBS, and also Replication & Redirection as Add On Modules in AhsayCBS, partners will need to ensure all paid licenses are under valid maintenance to access the LMP. For Pool keys in Version 7, an AhsayCBS will need to be selected.

Q

I have 30 Active Pool Keys in my LMP, do I necessarily need to purchase 30 AhsayCBS?

A

AhsayCBS is required in your Pool Key if you intend to upgrade to v7. If your customer is satisfied with features in V6 and does not want to upgrade, you do not need to provision AhsayCBS in the Pool Key and the Key will remain the current v6.x.

For example, if you have a total of 30 Active Pool Keys and you only mange to upsell v7 for 25 of the Active Pool Keys, you only need to purchase 25 AhsayCBS.

Q

Do I need to have valid maintenance for all licenses in the License Pool?

A

Yes. You will need to have valid maintenance of all paid licenses in the License Pool, including new license type such as AhsayCBS, Replication Modules, Redirection Modules, AshsayUBS, etc.

4. Backup Scenarios

Please list out difference scenarios of Virtual Machine backup so I can understand the number of licenses required.

4.1 Virtual Machines (VMware & Microsoft Hyper-V)

Q

Please list out difference scenarios of Virtual Machine backup so I can understand the number of licenses required.

A

Please see the following scenarios

Scenario 1
1x VM host (physical machine) with 2x VM guests. Only file server is running in each VM
Backup Strategy:
VM Run Direct. User need VM Run Direct and get access to files in the file servers running on the VM upon restore.
Number of licenses required:
1x CBS
1x OBM for the backup of VM host
2x VM for the backup of VM guest
Reason:
VM Run Direct (both VMware and Hyper-V) is supported in v7.5, this setup will enable VM Run Direct and the VMware Player can play back the VM from the backed up image and therefore user can have access back to the files in the restored VM.

Scenario 2:
1x VM host (physical machine) with 2x VM guests. Application (Exchange / Oracle / MSSQL / MySQL) is running in each VM
Backup Strategy:
VM Run Direct. User need to get access to data in the databases instead of an image of the database upon restore.
Number of licenses required:
1x CBS
3x OBM for the backup of VM host (1x OBM each for VM host and VM guest)
2x VM for the backup of VM guest
Reason:
VM Run Direct (both VMware and Hyper-V) is supported in v7.5. One AhsayOBM license will enable VM Run Direct. One additional OBM in each VM is required to restore the database running in the VM.
